About Website
The site was included by the National Endowment for the Humanities in the EDSITEment project as the Best Online Resources for Education in the Humanities.
The Division of Anthropology is dedicated to the study of human culture and biology. Established in 1873, only four years after the Museum's founding, the Anthropology Division has collected over 500,000 objects representing the peoples of Africa, Europe, Asia, the Pacific Islands and the Americas. These objects provide a window into the lives of the people who made them, and can be studied again and again as new questions are asked about the human experience. The anthropology collection is preserved in the Museum's storage areas and displayed in the Museum's cultural exhibitions, and over 170,000 of the 500,000 objects have been digitally imaged and can be accessed through this website.
