ARCHIVAL RESOURCES IN ANTHROPOLOGY


Areas of specialization:

Archives; artwork pertaining to AMNH publications in anthropology (in the Department of Anthropology Archives); photographs (in the Photographic Collection); films (in the Film Collection); books and serials on anthropology and natural history (in the Library).

Archival/manuscript resources:

Approximately 654 linear feet of archives (in the Department of Anthropology Archives); Artifact Catalog (in the Department of Anthropology Archives): 115 volumes. The Department of Anthropology Archives include accession documentation, catalogs and field notes related to the collections and also departmental correspondence from 1894 to the present.

Field notes, papers, etc.:

The Department of Anthropology Archives is a major resource for field notes related tot he archaeology of the Americas. Also in this location are miscellaneous ethnographic field notes - largely unpublished. In general, field data do not exist for ethnographic research published prior to 1970.

Visual/audio resources:

The Department of Anthropology's photographic and film collections are incorporated into Special Collections, Department of Library Services. (The personal photographic collection of Franz Boas is an exception - it is kept in the Department of Anthropology.) The Department of Anthropology's collection of 2,500 sound recordings (1900-1935) - primarily North American Indian and indigenous peoples of Siberia - are on deposit with the Archives of Traditional Music, Indiana University, which releases tape copies with permission of the (AMNH) Department of Anthropology.

Access:

The Collections and Archives of the Department of Anthropology are open to scholars, by written appointment, Monday - Friday, 10:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. See the "Guidelines for Study in the Collections and Archives of the Department of Anthropology, American Museum of Natural History," for more detailed information on access to Department of Anthropology archival resources. Library hours are Tuesday-Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A prior written request to the Special Collections Librarian is required. Department of Library Services materials must be used on-site.
