COLLECTED BY GEORGE B. GLOVER. DESCRIBED IN CULIN(1893) AS THE 'HON. GEORGE GLOVER, FORMERLY US CONSUL AT FUHCHAU'. HOWEVER, THE US STATE DEPARTMENT HAS NO KNOWLEDGE OF THIS NAME IN THEIR RECORDS, DATING BACK TO 1844.THE COVER LETTER WRITTEN BY GLOVER AND ACCOMPANYING HIS COLLECTION WAS WRITTEN IN SHANGHAI, AUGUST 18TH 1875.AT THE TIME OF THIS WRITING(NOV 12TH 2002) THIS ARTIFACT IS PROBABLY THE EARLIEST EXAMPLE OF A PRECURSOR MA JONG TILE SET. COLLECTED BY GEORGE BUNKER GLOVER ON OR BEFORE 1875. SIMILAR TILE SET IN THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM OF ART AND MOST PROBABLY ALSO COLLECTED BY GLOVER. MICHAEL STANWICK, MR. March 15, 2003.
GEORGE BUNKER GLOVER WAS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN WHO JOINED THE CHINESE CUSTOMS SERVICE AT CANTON IN 1859. HE WAS STATIONED AT FUZHOU (FORMERLY FUHCHAU) BETWEEN 22ND FEB 1872 AND 12TH SEPT. 1873. MICHAEL STANWICK, GLOVER IDENTITY. December 6, 2011.
