Exhibition Label: Bowl with lid. Gourd. Early 19th century. The container represents the Yorùbá cosmos, divided into aye, the visible world of the living, and orun the invisible world of gods, ancestors and spirits. Incised motifs, resembling those of body scarification, combine geometric patterns, animal images and man-made objects, including a divination board.
