Cultures throughout the Pacific Islands used mother-of-pearl both as decoration and for making utilitarian objects such as fishhooks. The mother-of-pearl that forms this hook is from a Black-lipped Pearl Oyster shell.

Exhibition Label: Inro. Mother-of-pearl, coral, jade, lacquer (polychrome), cord, metal, ivory, wood, pottery, glaze, pigment. Japan, 1700s–1800s. Historically, mother-of-pearl inlay work was Japan’s chief use of pearl oysters. These small sectional cases, called inro, were popular costume accessories for Japanese men in the 1700s and 1800s.
