Exhibition Label: WOMAN’S BELT. Unknown artist (Kiowa-Apache). Hide, silver. 1800s. Navajo artists borrowed the idea for the concho belt from Native people of the southern Plains, such as the Kiowas and Comanches. Early Navajo conchos were threaded onto a narrow leather band through holes cut in the center. After Southwest artists mastered soldering, they attached metal shanks to the backs of the disks, replacing the central opening with a decorative motif.

When Jesse Monongya visited the Northwest Coast he gave classes in stone-cutting and other jewelry techniques. As a result, Haida artist Donnie Edenshaw introduced abalone shell inlay “planets,” a motif Monongya often uses, into this bolo tie featuring the woman in the moon, a Haida crest figure.
